Paolo got out and held out his hand. Her knees shook as she placed her small hand in his larger

one, allowing him to help her from the car. But instead of leading her up the sweeping steps to

the villa he pulled her toward the dark, lush gardens that overlooked the cliffs.

“Where are you taking me?” she asked.

He looked down at her, his heavy-lidded eyes full of intent. “Does it matter?”

He drew her through an old wooden door that led past the seven-foot stone walls guarding the

secret garden. He led her past the intricately designed ponds, flower-beds and palm trees to the

nineteenth-century gazebo overlooking the cliff.

The sun was falling, plummeting like a fireball into the sea. The fading scarlet cast his sharp

cheekbones and jawline with a roseate glow. She looked at his mouth. His gorgeously cruel

mouth that had given her such pleasure. That had once said, I will always love you, bella, you

and only you.

He caught her staring and she jumped in embarrassment. She’d nearly leaned forward to kiss

him—another thing she’d sworn she’d never do…

What was this spell he cast on her?

She had to get a hold of herself.

“Don’t worry.” She straightened her shoulders, attempting a derisive laugh. “I won’t be stupid

enough to try to seduce you again—”

He pushed her back against the bougainvillea-covered trellis, sweeping her hair off her cheek

with his large hand.

“You don’t have to try, Isabelle,” he said in a low voice. “You’re always seducing me.

Everything you say, everything you do makes me want you.”

His hands cupped her jawline and the cool breeze, infused with the fragrance of roses and sea

salt, blew through her hair, spinning around her and making her dizzy.

“I want you more than I’ve ever wanted any woman,” he said, and he lowered his mouth to hers

in a deep, searing kiss.

She closed her eyes, transported by the feel of his lips on hers. The unexpected tenderness of his caress made her breathless with longing, desperate with need…

“Now, at last,” he whispered darkly against her cheek, “you’re mine.”
